Kazu Wakita's universe of painting is where there are poems from the heart that extends without limit and where you can feel his penetrating view of nature and life. The universe is often likened as chamber music resonating clear sound. "Wakita Museum" is a museum where elegant "music of color" breaths in green woods. It maintains 109 oil paintings, 72 sketches and drawings, and 101 silk screens, lithographs, and engravings (as of 1994) created by Kazu Wakita who represents the modern oil painting realm. It exhibits his works from days when he studied in Germany in 1920's, through the World War 2, to the current days, to display everything about the painter. Also the museum actively organizes art programs to get in contact with the modern, which results in enrooting refreshing cultural image into Karuizawa. |

WAKITA MUSEUM OF ART is 10 minutes away from JR Karuizawa station. It is located in Old Karuizawa atmosphere.
Kazu Wakita, a leading figure in the modern oil painting realm, realized his long-awaited dream creating this museum in 1991. This museum is built surrounding his long-cherished studio mountain cottage, in refreshing woods and natural illumination. You can deeply appreciate intimate and impressive world in this museum that resonates with nature.
The studio next to the museum was built by an architect, Mr. Junzo Yoshimura, in 1970. It is famous as an important building representing the wooden architectures of Japan in modern time. |

The museum exhibits collection of works by Kazu Wakita, mainly his numerous paintings, motives of which are birds, children, and plants, and also other programs. Every summer and fall, the museum holds concerts and art workshop, too.
Facing its court, there are a tea room and a museum shop selling museum's original goods and goods selected from the world map. Passing through the shop leads to a corridor, from which a big magnolia tree is seen in the center of the court. A cage attached to the tree is the good place for birds to gather. Please enjoy relaxed time listening to birds singing in reverberation of the paintings. |

Wakita museum was founded with a view to contributing to development and advancement of culture. It arranges a special environment where many people can appreciate art, makes works of art it owns including works of Kazu Wakita accessible to public, and conducts research and study on the artifacts. Wakita museum maintains and exhibits works of Kazu Wakita from inception to the latest to present his over 80-year achievement in art. Also it is engaged in art programs that seek contact point with the modern time through special programs, music concert, and workshop.
