  • かつて、病床に臥せっていた若き画家のアトリエに彫刻家の友人注1が連れてきた一羽の野鳥。
    偶然に出会うことになった〈鳥との対話〉は、後に鳥をモチーフに生まれた作品(「鳥に話す」1953年、「慈鳥」1953年、「放鳥」1953年、「鳥寄せ」1954年、「あらそい」1955年など)で、国内外の数々の賞を受賞していきます。
    この頃、脇田和は思うように絵を描けなかった苦悩から一気に解放されていったといいます。アトリエに迎い入れた鳥たちと、画家の視線の先に映る、自由に飛び放たれていく鳥の姿に、いつしか自身を重ね合わせていたのかもしれません。
    生涯にわたる〈鳥との対話〉は、画家を自らと深く対峙する絵の世界へと誘っていきます。本展覧会では、没後20年となる本年を機に修復した作品や未発表習作を展示する他、軽井沢にアトリエを構えた1970年代から晩年までの油彩、素描作品など

  • Some time ago, by a sculptor friend (Note 1), a wild bird was brought to the studio of a young painter who was sick in bed. This chance encounter with "Dialogue with Birds" later led to the works that used birds as a motif (such as "Talking to the Birds" (1953), "Compassionate Birds" (1953), "Released Birds" (1953), "Attracting Birds" (1954), and "Rivalry" (1955), which went on to win numerous awards both in Japan and abroad. 
It is said that around this time, Kazu Wakita was suddenly released from the anguish of not being able to paint the way he wanted to. Perhaps the artist began to see himself in the birds he welcomed into his studio, and he saw flying away freely before his eyes in those birds. 
The artist's lifelong "dialogue with birds" led him into a world of painting where he could deeply confront himself. This exhibition will display restored works and previously unpublished sketches to mark the 20th anniversary of his death this year, as well as approximately 80 oil paintings and drawings from the 1970s, when he set up a studio in Karuizawa, through to his later years.

    脇田 和　KAZU WAKITA (1908−2005年)
    1908(明治41)年東京生まれ。15歳の時ベルリンに渡り、17歳でベルリン国立美術学校に入学。1930(昭和5)年同校より金メダルを贈られ帰国。1932(昭和7)年太平洋画会初入選。以後、光風会、帝展などで受賞を重ねる。1936(昭和11)年猪熊弦一郎、小磯良平らと新制作派協会(現・新制作協会)を設立。戦後、1950年代にはサンパウロ・ビエンナーレ、ヴェネチア・ビエンナーレ等に出品。「あらそい」が第１回グッゲンハイム国際美術賞に輝いた。1959〜70年東京藝術大学で教鞭をとる。1970(昭和45)年、軽井沢に吉村順三設計によるアトリエ山荘が完成。1991(平成３)年『脇田美術館』を開設。1995(平成７)年〜2012（平成24）年、東京・第一生命本社ビルに脇田和作品常設ギャラリー。2005(平成17)年11月27日永眠。1991(平成3)年旭日小綬章。1998(平成10)年文化功労者。2005(平成17)年従四位を追賜。

  • Biography

    KAZU WAKITA (1908−2005)
    Born in Tokyo in 1908. He had a chance to move to Berlin at the age of 15 and entered the National Art School of Berlin at the age of 17. He was awarded a gold medal from the school in 1930, and returned to Japan. He was awarded his first prize at the Taihei Youga Kai in 1932, followed by many awards at Kofukai and the Imperial Fine Arts Academy Art Exhibition (Teikoku Bijutsu-in). Founded Shin Seisaku-ha Kyokai (currently Shin Seisaku Kyokai) with Ryohei Koiso and Genichiro Inokuma. After the war, in the 1950s, his works were exhibited at the Sao Paulo Biennale, the Venice Biennale, etc. He won the first Guggenheim International Art Award. He taught at Tokyo University of the Arts from 1959 to 1970. Atelier Villa designed by Junzo Yoshimura was completed in Karuizawa in 1970. “Wakita Museum of Art” was opened in 1991. A permanent gallery of Kazu Wakita's works was open at the Dai-ichi Life Headquarters Building in Tokyo, from 1995 to 2012. He passed away on November 27, 2005. His contributions were recognized with The Order of the Rising Sun in 1991, and Person of Cultural Merits in 1998. He was raised to Junior Fourth Court Rank after his death.
