「卓上の鳥」
1997年 油彩・キャンバス- 脇田和は、10代でドイツ・ベルリンに学びました。帰国後、小磯良平や猪熊弦一郎らとともに新制作派協会を創立し、戦後はヴェネチアビエンナーレやピッツバーグ国際美術展などの国際展や、米国国務省による日米美術交流プログラムにも積極的に参加し、国内外で活動を続けていきました。身の周りの日常に注がれる温かなまなざしはいつもかわらず、さまざまな素材や技法への好奇心や、色と色が織りなす滑らかなリズムと美しさへの追求を、筆を置くその日まで止めることはありませんでした。本展では、脇田和が旧軽井沢に制作の居を移した1970年代から晩年までの作品を中心に、油彩、素描、コラージュ作品など、約100余点を展示し紹介していきます。
館内には日本のモダニズムを代表する建築として知られるアトリエ山荘（友人であった建築家・吉村順三設計）が当時のまま保存されております。
その約80年に及ぶ画業の集積を美術館の空間の隅々で楽しむことができます。 -
Celebrating the 30th Anniversary of the Museum:
Kazu Wakita Exhibition “Opening of Flowers”
June 19th (Sat) through November 15th (Mon), 2021 - Kazu Wakita spent his school years in Berlin, Germany as a teenager. After returning to Japan, he founded Shinseisaku-ha Kyokai (New Art Society), with Ryohei Koiso and Genichiro Inokuma.
After the war, he actively participated in international exhibitions, such as the Venice Biennale and the Pittsburgh International Art Exhibition, as well as the US-Japan Art Exchange Program by the US State Department, and continued his activities both in Japan and overseas.
His warm gaze on everyday life around us, his curiosity about various materials and techniques, and his pursuit of smooth rhythm as well as beauty that colors interweave, never stopped until the day when his brush was stopped.
This exhibition introduces about 100 works, such as oil paintings, drawings, and collage works, focusing on the works from the 1970s to the later years when Kazu Wakita moved to Kyu-Karuizawa. Atelier Villa (designed by architect Junzo Yoshimura, who was his friend), which is known as a representative architecture of Japanese modernism, is preserved in the hall as it was of that time. You can enjoy a large number of paintings collected during the past 80 years or so, in every corner of the museum space. -

脇田 和 KAZU WAKITA (1908−2005年)
1908(明治41)年東京生まれ。15歳の時ベルリンに渡り、17歳でベルリン国立美術学校に入学。1930(昭和5)年同校より金メダルを贈られ帰国。1932(昭和7)年太平洋画会初入選。以後、光風会、帝展などで受賞を重ねる。1936(昭和11)年猪熊弦一郎、小磯良平らと新制作派協会(現・新制作協会)を設立。戦後、1950年代にはサンパウロ・ビエンナーレ、ヴェネチア・ビエンナーレ等に出品。
「あらそい」が第１回グッゲンハイム国際美術賞に輝いた。1959〜70年東京藝術大学で教鞭をとる。1970(昭和45)年、軽井沢に吉村順三設計によるアトリエ山荘が完成。1991(平成３)年『脇田美術館』を開設。1995(平成７)年〜2012（平成24）年、東京・第一生命本社ビルに脇田和作品常設ギャラリー。2005(平成17)年11月27日永眠。1991(平成3)年旭日小綬章。1998(平成10)年文化功労者。2005(平成17)年従四位を追賜。 -
Biography
KAZU WAKITA (1908−2005)
Born in Tokyo in 1908 (Meiji 41). He moved to Berlin at the age of 15 and entered the National School of Fine Arts in Berlin at the age of 17. He was given a gold medal for his work by the school in 1930 (Showa 5), and returned to Japan. He was awarded his first prize in 1932 (Showa 7) at Taiheiyo Art Association. Since then, he won numerous awards at Kofukai and Imperial Academy art exhibitions. He established, in 1936 (Showa 11), Shinseisaku-ha Kyokai (New Art Society) (currently Shinseisaku Kyokai) with Genichiro Inokuma and Ryohei Koiso. After the war, his artworks were exhibited at the Sao Paulo Biennale, Venice Biennale, etc. in the 1950s.
"Arasoi (Dispute)" won the 1st Guggenheim International Art Award. He taught at Tokyo University of the Arts from 1959-70. The atelier Sanso designed by Junzo Yoshimura was completed in Karuizawa, in 1970 (Showa 45). He founded and opened "Wakita Museum of Art" in 1991 (Heisei 3).
A permanent gallery of Kazu Wakita's works was opened in 1995 (Heisei 7) in the Dai-ichi Life Headquarters Building in Tokyo, which was closed in 2012 (Heisei 24).
He passed away on November 27, 2005. He received Order of the Rising Sun in 1991 (Heisei 3). He was awarded Person of Cultural Merit in 1998 (Heisei 10), followed by a court rank of Junior Fourth Rank after his death in 2005 (Heisei 17).
